Welcome

Welcome to Chief Middle School. For a lot of reasons this is a special place. Our goal is that all our students learn the important skills and concepts taught during the middle years of their schooling. We want to prepare kids for the next step in their educations. We want every child to be ready for high school.

We believe in educating the whole child. In addition to our five core subjects of reading, math, writing, science, and social studies we offer encore subjects of band, choir, art, health and fitness, technology, and drama. These cores and encores provide the foundation for all learning at Chief. Upon this foundation are extensive intramural offerings and, beginning in 2011-’12, a student advisory program. The intramurals provide options for kids to connect with school beyond their regular classes. Whether a student in interested in after-school hockey or joining our math club (or better yet, both) there are many ways for kids to connect. The advisory program will help kids navigate some of the challenges of middle school, develop advocacy relationships, and consider career and educational opportunities beyond Chief. All these components – core, encore, intramurals, advisory – are important in educating the whole child.

We also believe in working hard and learning together. No matter how much talent an individual student holds, he or she will have a better chance of reaching full potential by developing a solid work ethic. We promote this. We also promote learning together. We think this is more effective and more fun than learning individually. When have special activities that emphasize learning together. During our Wolveread, we all read the same book together. During our Wolverun, we all run together. Hard work and learning together, they’re important here.

Welcome to Chief – it’s a special place.

7th Grade Portland Field Trip

The date of the 7th grade field trip to Pioneer Square in Portland is Wednesday, May 30th 2012.  It is an all day field trip (from 8:15 am to 2:30 pm).

If you are a chaperone, you will need to be in the classrooms no later than 8:15 a.m. in order to receive instructions for the day.  We will leave Chief at 8:30 am by bus and be dropped off at the Cascade Max Station.  We will then take the Max train to Pioneer Courthouse Square. The students will collect information on various questions from a packet that will be used to create a project back at school. Groups will pick where they want to eat within a given area and then the buses will pick us all up at 1:15p.m. in front of the Portland Art Museum.  We need to arrive back at school around 2:30p.m.

If you have any questions, you can contact Mr. Flagan or Mrs. Engebretson at 885-6350. Thanks.

8th Grade Civil War Project

Our final eighth grade project is on the Civil War. This project cuts across all subjects… history, English, math, science and the arts. It is designed to allow students a great deal of freedom in choosing a topic. The projects will be displayed at our open house on June 5th. Take a look at this website for a copy of the project or more information: chiefhistory.blogspot.com
