Chief Umtuch National History Day students headed to state
March 14, 2024
Congratulations to Chief Umtuch Middle School AP history teacher Beth Doughty, math teacher Jon Nesbitt and their National History Day students. Twelve 7th and 8th grade students earned a spot in the state competition in Kirkland on April 27, with two more earning an alternate position.
The Chief Umtuch team earned four first-place finishes at the regional event on March 9, along with three second place finishes, and one each in third and fourth place.
“I’m always surprised at the wide variety of the topics that my students choose for their NHD entries, but not surprised by the creativity and effort that they bring to their projects,” Doughty said. “I am so proud that each of my students could share their love of learning and be recognized for their hard work.”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National History Day competition, with a fitting theme of “turning points in history,” inviting students to explore questions of “time and place, cause and effect, change over time, and impact and significance.”
